Meet Sarah
Upon completion of residency in 2014, Dr. Sarah Smith accepted a position as an attending Anesthesiologist at Northern Light, Eastern Maine Medical Center. She remained a staff Anesthesiologist until the fall of 2020 when she accepted the positions of Lead Physician and Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology. Sarah completed her undergraduate education at the University of Maine Fort Kent, before being accepted to the medical school program at The University of New England, Osteopathic School of Medicine from which she graduated with her degree in Osteopathic Medicine in 2010. She completed a four-year residency in Anesthesiology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA, in 2014.
When asked what inspired her to join the Sarah’s House Board; her response was “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and underwent bilateral mastectomies. I received my chemoradiation treatments at Northern Light Cancer Care and while I had easy access to receive my therapies, it was revealed to me during that time that necessary cancer treatments is not so easily accessible to so many patients who do not have the luxury of living near to NL Cancer Care. The invaluable service provided by Sarah’s House to support these patients and their families is profound and I very much wanted an opportunity to participate in an organization that seeks to provide access and support to this population. It is challenge enough to have to process receiving a cancer diagnosis, but no person should have to feel that they do not have ready access to timely and proper treatment. Sarah’s House provides some relief to the financial and time-consuming travel burdens that could otherwise interfere or delay their care.”
Sarah enjoys renovating her Victorian home in Hampden that she purchased 9 years ago- a labor of love to be sure! She also enjoys travel, music, reading and simply just spending time with her loved ones. Sarah adores her significant other and she is very close to her family which includes her parents; brother and his wife and children; and her younger sister. She also enjoys spending time with her mother’s Doxipoo, Rosie!
