Meet Paul
Dr. Paul Smith’s area of expertise is the entire spectrum of women’s health care. In Gynecology, managing menstrual issues, infertility, pain issues, using both medical and surgical techniques. In Obstetrics, shepherding a pregnant woman and her unborn child through pregnancy and delivery, for uncomplicated as well as high-risk pregnancies. His experience covers 45 years of clinical practice in the U.S., Europe, and Asia – also two 3-week clinical missions, one each in Ecuador and Guyana. Paul obtained his B.S in 1973 from the West Point U.S. Military Academy, received is M.D. from the USC School of Medicine in Los Angeles, CA in 1977 and his OB/GYN Medical Specialty Training from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1981.
Paul states that his top military achievements include graduating in the top 5% of his class at West Point, where he learned how to fly a helicopter, earned his paratrooper’s wings and his Ranger Tab. He served as Chief of OB/GYN in Germany, Korea, and the U.S.; served 22+ years on active duty and retired as a Colonel. His highest medical achievement was reached June 30, 1977 when he completed his specialty training. Most recently he medically served the Bangor community for 19 years.
When asked what inspired you to join the Sarah’s House Board, Paul replied “I was Sarah’s physician, and I delivered Morgan. I believe strongly in the supportive ministry of support, emotional and otherwise, that Sarah’s House provides”
Paul is a self-proclaimed competent handyman and enjoys dad jokes and home Engineering Design Projects. He holds a Commercial Pilot’s license, and a small airplane. After closing his clinical practice, he flew around the country for two weeks visiting family and friends. Paul lives in Dedham with his wife Bonnie, who is also retired. He has 3 children; two daughters and one son, all of which have great professional careers.
